Group Health Insurance

Health Insurance is a challenge for almost everyone and no one knows that better than an employer.  It has become one of the most crucial costs of employment and one of the most sought after of benefits.  Many states have some form of mandatory coverage requirement for employees of firms with a minimum number of employees.

True Group Health Insurance provides coverage without regard to insurability and spreads the risk to the insurance company over a large group of individuals.  Theoretically, the cost of insuring an unhealthy person who will have substantial claims on his/her policy will be offset by the lack of claim by a person who is healthier.

To find out what regulations you might be subject in your State, contact the State Labor Board and inquire about health coverage requirements.  In Hawaii, if you have employees working 20 hours or more, you are required by law to provide health insurance.

 Managing Group Health Costs

Every business wants to keep the cost of healthcare coverage to a minimum. Depending on the requirements of your State, you may have some flexibility or find that you are locked in to a set standard. Here are some of the ways to help address cost:

  • Restrict dental coverage to a discounted benefit plan - the employee receives a discount on services and you pay a modest membership fee instead of full insurance premiums.

  • Restrict vision coverage to a discounted benefit plan - same design as the dental (these plans can often be combined)

  • Have only one coverage option (not multpile carriers) or a set amount of premium that the Company will pay, leaving the balance of premium to come from the employee.

  • Raising the deductible to a high level and having the company assume a percentage of the deductible vs. higher premium.
