Group insurance is good for both the insurance company and the pariticpants of a group.  For the insurance company it allows the financial risk to be spread over a large number of people which helps to limit the liability somtimes taken on with just one or two lives.  For group members it sometimes is the only way a normally uninsurable person can obtain disability insurance.  Group rates are not always less expensive but tax advantages to employers can make a group policy a valuable employee benefit.
